How to Install BlueJ for Java (Step-by-Step Guide for ICSE Students)

BlueJ is the Java development environment (IDE) used in most ICSE and ISC schools. It is free, simple and designed for learning object-oriented programming. You can see your classes as boxes on the screen, create objects with a right-click and call their methods directly. This guide shows you how to install it on your own computer so you can practise at home.

Step 1: Download BlueJ

  1. Open your browser and go to the official website, bluej.org.
  2. On the home page, choose the download for your operating system: Windows, macOS or Linux.
  3. Always download from bluej.org. Other download sites may bundle unwanted software.
The current BlueJ installers include the Java runtime that BlueJ needs, so most students do not have to install Java separately.

Step 2: Install on Windows

  1. Open the downloaded installer (an .msi file) from your Downloads folder.
  2. Click Next, then choose whether to install for yourself only or for all users of the computer.
  3. Keep the default installation folder and click Install. Allow the installer to make changes if Windows asks.
  4. Click Finish. BlueJ now appears in the Start menu.

Step 2 (Mac): Install on macOS

  1. Open the downloaded .zip file. It extracts the BlueJ application.
  2. Drag BlueJ into the Applications folder.
  3. The first time you open it, macOS may ask whether you are sure, because the app was downloaded from the internet. Click Open.

Step 3: Check that BlueJ works

  1. Start BlueJ. You should see an empty main window with menus such as Project, Edit, Tools and View.
  2. Go to Project → New Project, give it a name such as Practice, and click Create.
  3. If the project window opens with a New Class button on the left, your installation is working.

Common problems and fixes

  • The installer does not start: right-click the file and choose Run as administrator on Windows. Check that the download finished completely.
  • "Unable to find Java" message: download the latest installer again from bluej.org. It includes the Java runtime. Older BlueJ versions needed a separate JDK.
  • BlueJ opens very slowly the first time: this is normal. It is setting up for first use, and later starts are faster.
  • School computers: BlueJ may already be installed. Look for it in the Start menu before installing.
