ICSE Class 10 Computer Applications Pre-board Papers 1 and 2 (MCQ)

Pre-board papers are the closest rehearsal you get before the real ICSE exam. These two Computer Applications pre-board papers were set by Trushna Tejwani for her Class 10 students. Both are 50-mark, one-hour papers made up entirely of objective questions: choose the correct answer, fill in the blanks, and predict the output.

These papers follow the 2021–22 semester pattern, which was fully objective. The current ICSE board paper also has Java programs in Section B, but the MCQs here are excellent practice for Section A, which carries 40 marks.

Papers included

  • Pre-board 1: default values, loops, type casting, the this keyword, constructors, operators and library methods.
  • Pre-board 2: source code and bytecode, classes and objects, operator precedence, Math methods, switch, loops, constructors, and output-based questions.

Download both papers below. Each one should take you about 60 minutes.

Worked examples from Pre-board 1

(a) What is the default value of the char data type?

The answer is '\u0000', the null character. Remember the defaults for data members: 0 for int, 0.0 for double, false for boolean, '\u0000' for char and null for objects such as String.

(b) Which of the following is an infinite loop?

int i = 5;
for (int a = 0; i < 20; a--) { }

This one never ends. The condition tests i, but the loop only changes a, so i < 20 stays true for ever. The other options all change the variable they test, so they stop.

(c) Which type of casting is shown below?

long y = 15;
int x;
x = (int) y;

This is explicit type casting, because the programmer forces a larger type (long) into a smaller type (int) with (int).

Topics these papers test

  • Data types, default values and type conversion
  • Operators and operator precedence
  • for, while and do-while loops, including output and iteration-count questions
  • Classes, objects, constructors and the this keyword
  • Library methods of the Math class, and switch statements

Tips for pre-board MCQs

  1. Read every option before choosing. Distractors often differ by one character, such as '\u0000' and \u0000.
  2. For output questions, dry-run the code on rough paper. Never guess.
  3. Revise the chapters where you made two or more mistakes, then attempt the next paper.

An object is an identifiable entity that has a set of attributes, behavior, and state. Attributes are individual Page 6 of 7 characteristics that differentiate one object from the other. The actions or operations an object can perform is called its behavior. The state of an object is defined by the set of values held by its attributes. Objects that share the same attributes and behavior are grouped together into a Class. An object belonging to a particular class is known as an instance of that class. Classes can be derived from other classes. The class that is derived from another class is called a sub class. class from which it is derived is called the superclass.
