ICSE computer applications 2021 question paper

About this paper
This is the ICSE Computer Applications Semester 1 examination paper from the 2021–22 session. It was held in November 2021, when the ICSE exam was split into two semesters. The paper carried 50 marks and lasted one hour, and every question was multiple choice. The answers are ticked on the scanned copy.
Today's ICSE paper is a single 100-mark exam with Java programs in Section B, but these MCQs remain excellent practice for Section A.
Sample questions explained
(i) The blueprint that defines the variables and methods common to all objects of a certain kind is termed as:
- (a) class
- (b) object
- (c) package
- (d) method
Answer: (a) class. A class is the blueprint, and objects are created from it.
(ii) A data type that holds an integer as well as a fractional part and occupies 32 bits is:
- (a) float
- (b) char
- (c) double
- (d) byte
Answer: (a) float. A float takes 32 bits (4 bytes), while a double takes 64 bits (8 bytes).
(iii) What is the final value stored in x? double x = Math.ceil(Math.abs(-7.3));
- (a) 7.0
- (b) 8.0
- (c) 6.0
- (d) 9.0
Answer: (b) 8.0. Math.abs(-7.3) gives 7.3, and Math.ceil(7.3) gives 8.0, the smallest whole number that is greater than or equal to 7.3.
How to practise with it
Attempt all the questions in one sitting, then compare your answers with the ticks on the paper. For every mistake, write down the rule you missed. Most of them involve data type sizes, Math methods, String methods and output questions.
